One doesn’t want to be ungallant but 33 is fairly long in the tooth for a chorus ballerina*. If you’ve not collected the rich businessman by that point one is going to have to think about working as a second career.

Mariafrancesca Garritano, 33, has broken the unwritten code of silence – which she fears could cost her a place in the opening performance of next season.

In scenes that would not look out of place in the Natalie Portman Oscar winning film Black Swan, Miss Garritano, a ballerina at Milan’s famous La Scala opera house, described how dancers suffered from eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, as they frantically tried to please teachers and opera chiefs with “the perfect body.”

“Sadly this is a phenomenon that affects the whole of the ballet world but is very rarely discussed,” she said. “It’s as if there is a Mafia code of omerta (silence) that rules over us and as it result it must never be broken.

So that’s a second career as a trainer or teacher out. So, what’s the game plan then?

Miss Garrittano has written about her experiences in a book called ‘The Truth, Please, About Ballet’.

Ah, the career as the lifter of lids, the speaker of the truth about the industry.

Difficult one to get right but there’s a good living in it if you can.

Usually better to start out as a CIA agent who confessess all to the lefty talk circuit or a communist who then confessess all on the righty one but don’t put your daughter on the stage has a timeless ring to it as well.

Maybe not the right word, but one who prances around in the background rather than getting the starring role?

Galloway and the Borders is, I’m told, the book with the best description of the subsidy regime for spruce planting in the UK and also of the history of it.

I therefore need a copy of this book but it seems to be out of print. Second hand copies are £50. Which seems a tad over the top. And I’m not convinced about the publisher’s “print on demand” promises: I’ve been waiting for two weeks for an answer to an inquiry email.

Does anyone have a copy that they can post to me? I’ll send it back after I’ve read it and taken notes.

Update: This particular problem is now solved. Ta v. much to all.

But what a very strange thing to sue about:

His contract with Phaidon is, he claims, a restraint of trade because it seeks to ban him from working on other projects with different publishers. The owner of the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea says he made two agreements with Phaidon in 2009 for books provisionally called The More You Like Art The More Art You Like and Questions by Charles Saatchi.

According to the writ, a section of the agreement prevents him from preparing, editing or licensing any work which forms part of the two books, or which might compete with the titles, for the life of the agreement. A judge is due to decide whether this amounts to an unreasonable restraint of trade.

That’s boilerplate, standard part of any publishing contract.

The specific terms might vary, there’s a lot of possible differences in how wide or narrow the “you can’t publish a competing title with someone else” might be, but the basic idea turns up in every contract.

OK, prance, preen etc.

So I know that Naughton reads The Register and that he’s even known to read (some) of what I write there.

So I see his column today. And it covers the very subject I covered for The Register recently.

Yes, his piece is very different. And I certainly don’t complain for I picked up the point from a Reuters investigation anyway (which could also be his source of course).

It’s just that what amuses is that the point being made is about how the Kindle is being overwhelmed with people offering either derivative or even directly copied pieces……

It’s fairly standard practice that over time good little phrases, sayings, witticisms, get attributed to the wrong people. As who actually said what to whom disappears into the mists of history it’s as if there’s a form of gravitational force attracting the attribution of this or that to just one or two historical figures.

Which figures it is depends on the country: Twain* never said many of the things that Americans attribute to him and even if he did, some of those were repetitions of points made by others. For us in the UK it seems to be Churchill.

It could have been either of them who originated the “two certain things in life, death and taxes” and it could have been one of myriads of other people**. I really don’t know: but I would bet that a likely attribution in the US would be Twain, in the UK, Churchill. Similarly, I’ve seen Disraeli’s*** “lies, damned lies and statistics” attributed to both.

Which brings us to this:

In the words of the famous political theorist, JCR Clarkson

“Socialism is such a crap system, it took a nation populated by Germans… and made it poor“

He may have said it but the original is actually PJ O’Rourke. Who himself, I’m told, is actually the most quoted person in the modern dictionary of quotations. It is always acceptable to quote the Peej, on the basis that if you’re going to nick jokes make sure you nick good ones.

But one should actually quote him….

* Twain obviously did say some very good things original to him. But more gets attributed than he actually said.

** Oscar Wilde is a very different case as he made a point of repeating others’ quips.

*** Was it Dizzy?

I get a rather nice review of the book in the Galveston “Daily News”.

Many of Worstall’s conclusions are contrary to the conventional wisdom, but Worstall arrives at them by starting with the positions presented by major environmentalists.

He then pares away the demonstrably wrong. Next, he starts with the solutions postulated by environmentalists and filters them through a rigorous economic analysis. The results often are startling and frequently hilarious.

Worstall is not opposed to environmentalism. He wants a cleaner planet. He even makes a large chunk of income from recycling metals.

But Worstall is unwilling to undertake human sacrifice for Gaia, especially when he shows that market solutions offer the same environmental benefits without unnecessary discomfort.

…..

Worstall is that most annoying of heretics, one that uses orthodox dogma to demonstrate the ridiculousness of accepted doctrine.

Given that that was what I was actually trying to do I like this review.
