indicating that Cuba is by no means exempt from the economic crisis that has affected most of the rest of the world.
But, but, Cuba is a near autarkic economy! That American trade embargo, remember, means that it’s not able to contact the rest of the world’s economy, that’s why the place is so poor, as you’ve been telling us for decades now.
There are no foreign banks, the Washington Consensus never took hold, they’re simply not subject to the same stresses and strains as the rest of us.
And since they’re not, how can our problems spill over to them?

It always amuses me that Cuba’s poverty will be attributed to the American trade embargo, while the rest of the developed world’s poverty will be attributed to those nasty American imperialist companies exploiting poor countries by trading with them.
