    I thought only Sharpe did that.

    Doesn’t surprise me. After napoleon was exiled lots of the navy would have been paid off, even skilled sailors like a sail maker … no need to pay (badly) seamen that were not needed. Had he not had a good war with plenty of prizes a few years later he could well be looking for employment and the army would take anybody that could walk and carry a musket.
