The Berlin Post Office kept going in 1945 almost until the end. The phone system worked to the point where Hitler’s staff in the bunker trying to gauge the extent of the Russian advance were reduced to ‘phoning numbers in the ‘phone directory that were in East Berlin and asking those who answered if they had seen any Russians.
