I got into an argument with Richard Murphy on his site once (before he banned dissent) as I pointed out that he presumably made use of the tax free income allowance of £5-6K per year, and that this was obviously in opposition to the spirit of the law that says you pay 20% tax on your income up to a limit and 40% thereafter.

He wasn't amused.

I like Kay Tie's de-Nazification idea. These Gramscians have got away with it far too long. Time for Toynbee and Murphy and Monbiot and Milne to be cast into the outer darkness. Nothing physical, you understand, simply a severance from the levers of opinion formation. Making it a sackable offence to advertise a public sector job in a GMG-owned paper would go a long way towards clipping their wings and without a hint of coercion (no-one not gripped in the most florid form of Toynbee-esque entitlement claims freedom of speech implies the right to insist the State buy you a megaphone).

I am far from clear that saving the banks was a good idea anywaty. What do they do for me ? Mothing I can think of and new banks could have been in their place in minutes

I gave up on that argument ("but other people do it!") aged six. Let us hope you never have a friend who jumps off a cliff.

I caqn't help wondering if these people could have arranged their affairs to pay more tax. Buy booze instead of water perhaps? Or take up smoking? Drive more? If they are sincere they will voluntarily write a cheque to the exchequer to cover the alcohol, tobacco and fuel duty they have filched from the people.
I'm not holding my breath.

It's certainly true that Gary North knows fuck all (where did he buy his 'doctorate' again?). The WSJ, on the other hand, correctly refers to it as <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20091016-709525.html" rel="nofollow">the Fed</a>, as does everyone else who isn't an idiot.

<i>"For clearly, the fact that they were not banned showed that at least some people wished to keep them."</i>

Actually, the fact that they were not banned showed that the people with all the power wished for them to keep them.

That's what really, really rankles with Polly. Her people aren't in power. And are never likely to be...

Not being American I simply follow common usage, eg http://www.lewrockwell.com/north/north682.html

Dr Gary North may know fuck all either but you can take it up with him.

Why is it THAT some people insist ON making some WORDS into acronyms WHEN they aren't? Commonly FED for Fed and MAC for Mac. Even ESCROW for escrow.

Is it because the writer's unfamiliarity with the word leads to capitalisation as a subconscious marker for their readers to see that the writer knows fuck all about the topic?

Obviously got confused since in 1929, as well as stimulus packages and high taxes the FED also raised liquidity, pretty much exactly whats going on here. For an example of the free market treatment of a Depression, "tested to destruction" the Great Depression of 1920-1921 is a good example.

The laissez-faire approach was so successful was that no ones ever heard of it!

WGCE.

We are going to need a serious de-Nazification programme after regime change. These two dangerous idiots need cutting down. The best way to do this is to choke off the money. Retrospective taxes imposed on GMG would be most deliciously ironic. And we could create specialist fraud squad that prosecutes those leftie fat cats who have sucked oh so hard on the public teat.

La Toynbee walks around in the street without wearing a burqa. Since that will be illegal soon, can we stone her to death now?
