The lesson of the latest recession is that far too many well-qualified young people have been wasting their talents in insecure, low-paid service jobs with limited prospects.
If we’ve not got the jobs that require all these shiny new polytechnic degrees then clearly, we shouldn’t be educating people at these shiny new polytechnics.

Quite. and its a moot point how many people actually use- or even remember- the majority of what they were taught in schools. Perhaps there’s a case for saying we go overboard on education.

Pat, there certainly is a case for that. In fact, even without massive subsidies for education an overprovision might be expected due to signalling effects (i.e. education to signal that you are smarter than other people).

The country is awash with talented, well-qualified people; perhaps wages should be falling commensurately. If the employment market was adjusted to reflect supply and demand, perhaps more individuals would find work better suited to their qualifications, freeing up those insecure low-paid posts. Suddenly the latter wouldn’t be secure and low-paid anymore, and it would be the recently qualified graduates who would be working for <£10k/year?

Is there any chance that those poly students were recipients of diplomas in enterpreneuship? Or was it media studies?
