That’s because the dictionary definition of “conservative” means “disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc., or to restore traditional ones, and to limit change.”

The whole point is that the word “conservative” isn’t the sole prerogative of political parties that call themselves “Conservative”.

So when a pregnant woman goes into “labour” it doesn’t mean she’s about to give birth to socialism. When a person has a “liberal” helping of food, they are not necessarily speaking about Cyril Smith’s diet.

And most of all when someone describes a candidate as being a “monster raving looney” they might not necessarily be referring to membership of the UKIP.
