Quick question

Does anyone know where I can look up the accounts of a registered charity?

Not the most vital of questions to be sure, but I’m just interested to see where a charity/quango gets its money from. I’ve got the identifying number of it….does that give me access to a database where I can see the accounts?

Go to the first page of the charity commission website, put in the number and you will be taken to records filed for the charity – easy really – a functioning government system (!)

I think the following link should help, assuming they’re registered correctly

    http://www.charity-commission.gov.uk/registeredcharities/accountsonline.asp

Tim adds: Thanks very much for that, just what I was looking for. The specific charity I was looking at is brand new, so no accounts yet, but that site will come in useful in the future.

Most if not all charities are incoporated companies. The best way to get information on any company is to go to Companies House online:

Use webcheck to find the name and then order information on the company: annual reports, directors, accounts etc. Link to webcheck below:-

Go to http://www.guidestar.org.uk. This gives info on all charities, though it is subject to some controversy within th charity sector.
