Telecoms info bleg

October 18th, 2008 · 13 Comments

So, we got any telecoms genii (geniuses?) reading here?

We’d like to get an ISDN line set up so that we don’t have to keep going to radio studios to do five minute spots.

As I understand it, there’s more to it than just getting an ISDN line. We also need some piece of gadgetry to be compatible with BBC systems.

Anyone know about this?

    You need one of these

Not cheap but then neither is an ISDN line.

Look under ISDN for the GSGC5

Might be able to get one second hand if you’re lucky.

    ISDN. Blast from the past.

Isn’t it time we moved over to using IP-based protocols for this?

In theory the use of IP would be much better. However, there’s no guarantee that the data packets would arrive on time as you get with a dedicated line like ISDN. It would be great if more radio stations used Skype or a better codec but the BBC is still wedded to ISDN.

“However, there’s no guarantee that the data packets would arrive on time as you get with a dedicated line like ISDN.”

There would if BT pulled their finger out and started rolling out real-time protocols on 21CN to the end customer.

But yes, there’s no end of surprise to how resistant old technology is to being replaced. I had to send a fax the other day. An honest-to-God old fashioned fax.

If only they would. I broadcast for a living sometimes and it’s crazy that I should have to trot along to broom cupboard studio to use a puny 128k line when I have 8megabits at home. Grr!

Phone BT and ask. They are now using ISDN lines for digital telephony (we are getting a system installed at work — and they are installing it for “free”).

The line rental for one ISDN2 is about £130 per quarter (and that includes £60 worth of calls).
