By and large our intellectuals live their lives entirely free of even the briefest consideration in the national press, which is far too busy with nonintellectuals such as Amy Winehouse, Jade Goody and Giles Coren.

Couldn’t be anything to do with the fact that intellectuals don’t usually have anything to say about everyday life, and often seem more concerned with appearing cleverer than ordinary folk than with being right. The aforementioned trio may not be the sharpest knives in the drawer but their struggles are with everyday issues- and their lack of success cheers people up instead of making them feel small.

Liddle is just jealous. Mind you , he tries so hard to come across as a sort of uber-chav, with his often vulgar Sunday Times football column, his barely disguised racism, etc, etc.

I’m wondering, in the light of this pseudo-chavishness, what actually constitutes an intellectual. Someone at a university? Someone from the Arts?
