There exists no commercial, political or social problem that meddling by the European Union cannot make worse. Those who doubt this assertion might care to look at what’s happened to the United Kingdom’s mail system and post office network since the EU Directives of 1997 and 2002, which set out to improve the quality of postal services across member countries.

I think you underestimate the ability of the UK Government to cock up the liberalisation of the Post Office. How can proper benefits accrue while it is micromanaged by Gordon Brown? How can it offer banking services when it is hampered by regulations on competition from the state (as Northern Rock now is)?
New Zealand has two privately-run post offices. It works very well. Why can’t we do the same?

I note Randall is repeating the lie that the government is not allowed to subsidise the universal service because of state aid rules. It is.
