The PJ O’Rouke Commencement Speech

Yeah, it’s, umm, OK.

The thing is though, having read just about alll of the man’s output over the years, I can’t place which previous essays and books the jokes come from but I know I’ve read them before.

Wealth is not a pizza, where if I have too many slices you have to eat the Domino’s box

Instead, be a corporate lawyer and make $500,000 a year. No matter how much you cheat the IRS, you’ll still end up paying $100,000 in property, sales and excise taxes. That’s $100,000 to schools, sewers, roads, firefighters and police.

Both Eat the Rich, aren’t they?

So should we condemn the younger P J O’Rourke because he imitated the older P J O’Rourke? The way I see it, an unoriginal joke is still a good joke if the author is smart and writes well. And O’Rourke is, and does.

Tim adds: Very true, it’s just that I expect so much more from The Master.

Surely a Lawyer doesn’t generate any value though, only redistributes it. So the argument doesn’t work here.
