Journalists don’t have to be knowledgeable to be successful. All they need is a few good phrases and a human-interest angle.
Basically it’s money for old trope.

If subsidising consumption in this instance is bad (and I see where you’re coming from) what then for the old dear that can’t afford to heat their home, to a sufficient degree to survive, without the subsidy?

There are no such people. Simple.

Nonsense. I visit them all the time. Without extra help from the Government, which is effectively a subsidy on the tariff, they cannot afford to pay their heating bills.
